The English bulldog it is about time I mentioned my favourite animal on this site..

What can I say stubborn yes, determined yes, wilful definitely, loving a great pet for anyone of any age without a doubt.

1. They have been called everything from lazy couch potatoes, “ oh oh who’s fault will this be then” you cant just chuck a bulldog into the street and expect him to exercise himself.

2. Some bulldogs may not want a lot of exercise, because most of them to a degree have breathing problems.

3. So a short stroll will often do these animals, but they must have this exercise daily, some are more than happy never to go out of the back garden.

There is as in humans every temperament of bulldog, mostly friendly creatures, but they will defend their owners to the death if need be.

Hard headed bulldogs, unfortunately people not in the know just put this down to the breed being thick, not true they are remarkably intelligent (when they want to be).

You do get the occasional energetic bulldog, but these are fairly rare.

Placid bulldogs these are the norm.

Some dogs will only be happy in the company of one person, others love a family environment.

The worst aspect of these brilliant dogs is gas, make sure you are well down wind when they let rip.

That bugger of mine has a smile on his face when he drops one, but with a healthy diet the problem can be alleviated a bit.

1. Sometimes a male will act aggressively towards other dogs, and I have yet to meet one who likes cats.

2. Never feed your English bulldogs if there are other animals around, they are very protective of their food.

It is not very often that a bulldog will bark, but don’t let that fool you he will make plenty of slobbering noises.

Be prepared for when he shakes his head, if you have your best clobber on do a runner because he will cover you in drool.

I have already said they are stubborn, and some people will tell you they are difficult to train. I have never found this to be the case, granted you will need plenty of patience, but this is the same for any dog.

Just keep in mind they are not sheepdogs, so do not expect the same kind of behaviour from a bulldog.

Just a few pointers please do not be put off these marvellous dogs, just because you have read somewhere that they are a handful.

* The bulldog is not of a great size.

* He has a very short coat of fur, this is easy to look after.

* On the whole they are a very agreeable pet, they get on with most people, even though some are scared by his look.

* He doesn’t need a great deal of exercise, but like all of us he has to have some.

They are an excellent pet for an elderly person, because if you like a snooze in the afternoon I can guarantee he will be laid alongside of you snoring his lid off.

Before I go I cannot finish this without mentioning that your vet will become your new best friend, because there are a lot of health issues surrounding the bulldog, but go on treat yourself or your old granny, you will not regret it.
