If you are a cat lover, you will I am sure have come across what in your mind is a disturbing feature of cat behaviour.

Eating grass your first instinct will be, oh know the cat needs help I will have to take him to the vet.

Don’t the cat is doing what comes naturally he is keeping himself healthy, no it is not a tonic or a medicine it is a vital part of cat make-up.

The cat has not got the facility to separate bones and feathers, so all he can do is gobble the lot down. And he will do this quickly imagine if the cat was in the wild, he would be fending of other animals that want his dinner.

Here is the clever bit about your cat, he knows if he tries to pass these feathers and bones through his digestive tract he will either get a blockage, or do some other serious damage to himself.

So he eats grass, this starts off the completely natural act of regurgitation (being sick).

He will also fetch up fur balls this way, what I want to know is why my cat always manages to get through the cat flap, and then he sick’s this mess up in the hallway, and he always seems to have a little smile on his face while I’m cleaning up, ahh one of life’s mysteries.

* Do not make the mistake of thinking, If I give him some vegetables that will be better than him eating grass, it isn’t.

* It will pass straight through the cat leaving no benefit to the animal, without getting too technical cats cannot produce the enzymes that break down plant and vegetable matter (science bit over folks).

If your cat is indoors a lot he may attempt to eat your house plants, on no account let the animal do this, most house plants are extremely toxic, and all he will achieve is to make himself ill or worse.

In the past we have come across cats, that will not under any circumstances go outside. So we have suggested to owners to plant up a small box with different grasses in it for the cat to eat.

Don’t worry the cat wont use it as its personal toilet, they are not daft, why would it “because” you have trained your cat from being a kitten to use the cat litter box haven’t you.

There you have it folks so the next time you are complaining about cleaning up this unsightly mess from your cats insides, just remember he is doing what comes naturally, (but I bet he is smiling secretly to himself).
